Today I upgraded to Wordpress 2.7 on this blog. I followed the abbreviated instructions and everything ran smoothly.

YLF will stick with an older version of the platform until we do a major update sometime in 2009, but it is great to install 2.7 on theBlogEasy to see the awesome progress the Wordpress team has made in this release. The admin UI has taken a big step forward in aesthetics and usability. It is easy on the eyes, and things seem to fall to hand in a very convenient way.

Good job Matt and the team at Automattic!

Wordpress is so simple. Here are the steps I took to get this blog up and running.

Created a database on one of our servers

Downloaded Wordpress 2.6 from Wordpress.org

Set up the “wp-config-sample.php” file and renamed it to “wp-config.php”

Used ftp to put the contents of the unzipped Wordpress folder in the html root folder

Browsed to the installation script and followed the steps

Changed the default “About” page text to something more appropriate

Wrote the first blog entry (this one)

Enabled pretty permalinks

Yep, definitely the blog easy.

[update] Easy maybe, but this sure looks ugly. Next step will be to install a better theme.

[update 7/27/2008] Installed the wp-andreas01 theme and modified it a bit – much happier now.
